Diffusori ATC
Girovagando in cerca di informazione sulle ATC, ho trovato questo brano redatto dalla ATC stessa, argomento bass reflex vs casse chiuse.
Mi sembra interessante e un pò controcorrente. A me sembra sensato..
A port can be used to extend bass response to lower frequencies by being tuned lower than the driver/box resonance. This is the way most ports are used in the majority of consumer home audio speakers. ATC are using ports in the same way as is used in pro audio at concerts - to gain efficiency. There is a huge difference in the two approaches.
The consumer home speaker approach allows a smaller cheap woofer in a small cheap box to produce LF more cost effectively than if done properly. This generally results in poorer quality bass but can still sound good if done well. The deficiencies in this design usually show up in high levels of distortion in the bass at elevated SPL.
ATC are using the port to allow them to use a more expensive driver in a given box. High quality drivers will have higher damping (Qts) due to large motor and high flux. This allows the port to be used to gain efficiency and still remain critically damped (better transient response). These designs can be well behaved and remain relatively low in distortion even at high SPL.
Basically, if you are talking high fidelity (low distortion) then the ONLY place you should see ported speakers is when they become large. There really isn't a good high fidelity reason to add ports to a small size speaker - all it does is increase distortion at the same time as it gains you greater bass extension. The issue is that below the port tuning you basically have the woofer in an infinite baffle (no box) and the woofer has absolutely no air damping. This means uncontrolled woofer excursion and very high distortion. So ATC simply follow good engineering practice or principles for highest fidelity.
The three options or applications of a ported speaker are as follows (source Colin Miller):
1. A system of 3 dB greater efficiency without sacrificing extension, defined by the -3dB point, or cabinet size. It doesn't make the driver more efficient, but it extends the bandwidth of a more efficient, over-damped driver (bigger magnet, lower Qes). (THIS IS WHAT ATC DO)
2. A decrease in cabinet size by 50% without sacrificing extension, again defined by the -3dB point, or efficiency.(THIS IS WHAT MOST HOME HI-FI SPEAKER MANUFACTURERS DO FOR THEIR TALL NARROW FLOORSTANDING SPEAKERS
3. An increase of low frequency extension by 1/3 of an octave, sometimes more, depending on the compared sealed alignment, while maintaining the same efficiency level or cabinet size. (THIS IS WHAT MOST HOME HI-FI SPEAKER MANUFACTURERS DO FOR SMALL BOX SPEAKERS OR MONITORS)
The cost of an expensive woofer versus a cheap woofer is significant in the price of a speaker. $50 for a cheap woofer versus $300+ for a good woofer. Ultimately this can be $1,000s in difference in retail price point. Ports are mere plastic tubes and cost 50 cents, additional glue and a router cut in the baffle. Basically a port is used to reduce cost of the woofer/speaker system EXCEPT in example 1 above where it actually increases the cost by enabling the use of more expensive higher power bigger magnet driver.
